[Woodcarver] Re Brave Questions

Painting:? being a painter before I was a carver I actually enjoy painting but as a woodcarver I hesitate to paint any carving because I love the look and feel of wood.?? But if I choose to paint my carvings, I prefer artists oils diluted with double boiled linseed oil.

Sharpening:? Can take it or leave it, but it is a chore which must be done constantly. I greatly prefer power sharpening as I sharpen a lot of tools and do not like losing precious carving time..? I like my own little setup using Koch wheels and felt wheels. You can keep all the big expensive systems.? There is an art to sharpening and I spend a lot of time trying to teach my students to sharpen but it seems that some pick it right up and others have great difficulty. Some never get it.? It just takes a certain touch which I have decided that not everyone is capable of.

Hi Doug,?
?

My favorate paint style is just a clear varnish. Most wood doesn't need the
help of stain so clear varnish is what I choose to bring out the best
qualities of the wood.?
?

Sharpening style I like a rounded bevel with rounded corners sharpened to
about a 29 degree angle. That works best for my style of carving especially
for going deep into the mantel background.?
