[Woodcarver] Chip Carving in Hard Wood

I want to carve a monogram into a cherry wood box I am building.  I have chip carved in bass wood, butternut and pine but never in harder woods.  Any hints on what I should do?  I have carved maple, cherry and birch and found them to be difficult but carveable as long as I took small chips and used all my patience.
