Maura,

As the person who introduced the concept of the Trade Blanket to the woodcarving
world, I feel that I should answer your questions. I am not at home this week
but will be tomorrow. On the home computer I have stored a direction sheet for
the trade blanket. I will send you a copy.

We have found that allowing "green" (money) to be traded for an item increases
the interest and allows people to participate that haven't brought anything to
trade. You may need to specify that the items must be carving related. I think
it was Michigan that had kittens brought to be traded.

A side note, I was introduced to the concept ofthe trade blanket at a conference
of the New York State Outdoor Education Association. The items traded all
related to nature and the environment, useful to outdoor educators. The Trade
blanket was originally used by the French fur traders while dealing with the
Native Americans - thus the use of limited speech and lots of gestures. The
phrases most often used are: "Good Trade" and "No Trade" and "sweeten the pot".

Have fun with this and don't worry about changing rules slightly. I first
started this at a GOW in Illinois and it has now spread to Florida, Michigan,
and Pennsylvania and probably to places I don't know. Floyd Rhadigan is a great
"master of ceremonies" and has run trades where ever he goes.

Sandie

This question goes out to anyone who has ever attended a trade blanket

Hi Its Maura, and i am in charge of running the trade blanket for the NEWR. I am
trying to run our trade blanket like others are run so they can be a standard
type of thing all over North America so people attending roundups will know what
to expect.
how do the trade blankets that you are familiar with work?
Is money(cash) an acceptable trade item?
would it be better to have it strictly a trade blanket(w/ no cash allowed) and
then afterward to hold a mini auction for those who are looking for cash to
trade for their item?

all suggestions are also welcome before I finalize the rules for the Newr trade
blanket next week.
