Richard- this is one of those days- please post some photos of the netsuke
you have done. I would so much like to see them. It is so much 'down my
alley' that I really must give it a try.

What are your favorite woods to use? I have a good supply of both French
boxwood and South American boxwood- as well as ebony, pink ivory, and
everything in between. At the rate I use my special woods I have a lifetime
supply- especially if using them in small things like netsuke. Do you use
power or hand tools?

on a leaf perhaps? I have been carving them for about 5 years. I keep going
back to the site and trying something new all the time. And it don't take
much wood. One of these days I will get some pictures up of them.

Ah Richard- did you have to go and post that link? Now I'm back to thinking
about making netsuke, and it is all your fault. I kinda made one in mesquite
back in 1991- before I knew how to carve. It is not one of my proudest
carvings, but it does look like the cow calf pair I used as models. Mesquite
is hard as a rock- and I was using X-Acto tools. Exercise in futility- but
it helped me to get the A grade in Japanese Art History.

I like to work small- and I like the forms of insects and small animals and
vegetation- so you can see why I like netsuke a whole lot.
I even have a micro-motor tool now, so that would make it lots easier.
Someday I will have to really give it a serious go-

Hi Terry, Box wood is going to be hard to find And if you find some it's
going to be expensive.

Try some pear or apple wood. Here's a link for Netsuke carvers.

http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index.php?

If you would like some apple let me know, I have some that I use for carving
them little critters.

Hi gang,

Im wondering if anyone knows of an Ontario or somewhere else in Canada that
sells Boxwood. I am going to be starting to carve some Netsuke and from
what I am reading Boxwood hold the detail well in these small carvings. Of
course I will display my carvings to the group when I do some. Thanks

Terry
