Hi Donna, I like to use woods that show the details of the carving. Cherry , apple or yew is nice and can take find detail. Some Black walnut is good. I like the lighter color Ebony. desert iornwood is nice. I did a turtle out of Osage orange and let the top set in the sun lite for a few months, witch turned a nice golden brown. When you picked it up and looked at the bottom, it was still a bright yellow. I have a lizard that I am going to do the same thing with. I haven't tried Pink Ivory. Pick up some sycamore and try it. With the flecks it make for a nice lizard or dragons.
I use power most of the time. I have a par-a-grave outfit the I use for the fine detail. I made up some Japanese styled Ivory carving knives for finshing.

Richard- this is one of those days- please post some photos of the netsuke you have done. I would so much like to see them. It is so much 'down my alley' that I really must give it a try.
What are your favorite woods to use? I have a good supply of both French boxwood and South American boxwood- as well as ebony, pink ivory, and everything in between. At the rate I use my special woods I have a lifetime supply- especially if using them in small things like netsuke. Do you use power or hand tools?
