Cedar is not a good carving wood for holding detail. Basswood has a much finer, more consistent grain which works much better for carving. Most good basswood for carving grows in northern Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan. Considering the price of different woods, basswood is one of the cheaper ones. Considering the hours invested in your carving I would start with basswood.
