Hi Alex,

There's a whole lot of different species of pine, some good for carving and some not so good. Sugar pine is one that's good for carving. If you're switching to pine to find something cheaper then basswood, I think you'll find sugar pine costs a little more then basswood.

Subject: [Woodcarver] Pine for carving

The folks in Europe use pine for various carving. I'm into acanthus style carving, and would like to check out pine for a project, rather than the normal basswood. Does anyone have experience with this, and also a recommendation for a source, hopefully in a price range I'd be willing to pay. The size would be 6/4 (rough cut) 24 inch long, and 4 or more inch wide.
Thanks
Alex in Minnesota
