The Amish don't use electricity so doubt if they did traditional pyrography. They might have figured out another way to burn but they also don't do much decorative stuff to use in their everyday lives. They might have built the box for someone else to decorate.

Subject: [Woodcarver] Unusual Folk Art Box
Hello, All,
I came across this unusual box on eBay with stylized
figures carved with a pyrography background
texture and border. It is from 1929 and thought
to be possibly Amish by the vendor.
We were very curious about it, as to how it was made.
Are the hinges part of the back of the box? Perhaps
some of you know how they are done.
The art work looks not so much traditional Amish as
the work of an individual artist, probably a folk artist,
but not what you would typically expect from one
either. His name was Jud King.
I'd love to know your opinions about the various
aspects of the box: the craftsmanship of the box
itself, and the artistic interpretation of the figures,
which is minimalist (am not even sure which animals
are which in most cases), whether you think the box
is Amish in origin, etc.
Here's the address on eBay for the box:

Thanks to all,
