it's nice that it is implied that whitespace can be the separator.

if you revisit the monospaced-versus-proportional difficulties,
use of the pipe as a separator (or indeed any separator-character)
highlights the nonperfection of alignment with a proportional font.

i use 3-or-more spaces as a separator, with the result that
the nonalignment of columns becomes virtually unnoticeable.
