[MCR] Mt Carlyle Lodge, Kaslo Kootneys

Public Mountain Conditions Report mcr at informalex.org
Mon Feb 20 23:23:02 EST 2012

Came out yesterday from a week at Carlyle Lodge, north of Kaslo. in
general conditions were good most of the week with some changing
conditions by later in the week with the addition of 12-15cm and some
SW winds that started to pick up.

Only noted some very isolated natural activity through the week,
mostly on north and NE aspects and from very steep terrain. Southerly
aspects had a sun crust but were skiable except for due southerly
exposures. HS at treeline averaged at 200-250cm.

Cornices seemed very big in many places and some isolated cornice
failure was noted. Though not triggering any large slabs, one on a
steep rocky NE face was cornice triggered with a resulting size 2 avalanche.

No surface hoar was found on S-SW aspects but some hard compression
tests about 30cm down were noted.

On northerly aspects surface hoar was prevalent down about 10-15cm,
and it was getting somewhat reactive where the new snow was wind
affected. An additional 10cm on Saturday was evident and would
suspect that northerly aspects may start to become more reactive
especially if winds pick up.

It sounds like these conditions are similar in many places right now,
it won't take a lot of load to significantly change the reactivity of
the new snow overlaying the surface hoar.
