We went for a tour up to Bruins Pass and skied the 8812 bowl today. Up
hill travel is challenging to about 2000 with the combination of crust and
low snow coverage. Ski crampons would be a worthy addition to the pack for
the next little while. The crusts that formed during last week's warming
and rain started to soften up around 2100m and were mostly gone by 2300m.
The skiing was surprisingly good above this elevation, and even
surprisingly good below, given that the breakable crust that was expected
actually carried well enough. Test results showed that the layers of
concern from November are not reacting - although they were reacting
during the warming three days ago. We kept an eye out for pockets of wind
slab and though it appears to be bonding well, it's still something to
watch for. The ski out is fast and icy. Take care.
