Question about the N&W freight "hooter" whistle

A couple years ago, I took my N&W whistle from 2173 to Cass where it  was 
used on a Shay on their Bald Knob run.  The next morning I was at the  station 
when two local men came up to the engineer at different times as he  was oiling 
around and they commented about noticing a different whistle the day  before. 
One man lived about 9 air miles away and the other about 10-1/2 miles as  the 
crow flies!  We estimated this from the topo maps I had with me at the  time.  
Now Bald Knob is atop a 4800+ foot high mountain and there was a  good wind.
