Interestingly enough, what was not covered in the documentary was an
interview with Kate Lane - nee Lambert (Ronnie Lane's second wife). The
only "family" insights we have of the second marriage are from Lana
Lane, Ronnie's step-daughter. The song "Annie" (found on the 1977 Pete
Townshend/Ronnie Lane collaboration "Rough Mix") was written by Ronnie,
Eric Clapton and Kate Lambert. There is a dual disc version of "Rough
Mix" out at the moment.

On 27 July 2002, Kate Lane, was in a house fire in which her home was
totally destroyed. Kate survived and was in relatively good spirits. She
lost everything. Her comments at the time were: "When all your past is
eradicated, you've got no choice but to start again."

On 15 March 2004, it was reported that, when her marriage to rocker
Ronnie Lane came to an end, Kate was left penniless. Seventies excess
had taken its toll and she was left to raise their children on her own,
supporting herself through a string of dead-end jobs. Some of Britain's
biggest musicians then planned to come together to raise money for Kate
and her sons, Luke and Reuben, and to pay musical tribute to a rock
legend (Ronnie). Reuben is the godson of Eric & Pattie Clapton. You see
a shot of Eric holding Reuben, as a baby, circa 1979 in The Passing Show
documentary. They became godparents after Eric and Pattie's marriage
that year. When Eric married on 27 March 1979 he had a full beard. Later
that year he had shaved off the beard completely, but kept the longish
hair.

On 8 April 2004, the concert, called "One More for the Road", took place
at the Royal Albert Hall. Eric Clapton was on tour in Frankfurt, Germany
on that day, so obviously he was not there. But, the memorial/tribute
concert included Pete Townshend, Paul Weller, ex-Faces Kenney Jones and
Ronnie Wood, Sam Brown, Ocean Colour Scene, Midge Ure, Chris Farlowe,
Deborah Bonham, Chris Jagger, Robert Hart (Bad Company), Glen Matlock
(Sex Pistols), Mick Jones (The Clash), Steve Diggle (Buzzcocks), Steve
Ellis (Love Affair), plus a line-up of Ronnie's post-Faces band, Slim
Chance.

Prior to and following the concert a row broke between Susan Gallegos
(Ronnie Lane's third and final wife) and the organisers over the
proceeds of the concert, with Susan demanding half the takings, being
the legitimate widow of the Ronnie Lane estate, i.e. she owned whatever
songs were his. I doubt if she contributed to the organising of the
event.

Aside from the above, it was indicated in an article dated 23 December
2003 that The Passing Show interviews would be filmed in 2004. By that
date it was known who would be interviewed the following year, including
EC.

By sheer chance (slim chance?), I picked this up on ebay the other day
and it is very impressive. Yes I was influenced by the fact that Clapton
is interviewed, but the doco itself is great and a fitting testimony to
Lane.
I was aware he had toured Britain with a circus troupe in the mid-70s
and lost money on the venture, but the story is detailed thoroughly
here, and there are many further insights into his life and career. Also
interviewed are Bruce Rowlands and Henry McCullough, both of whom played
with Lane during that era, and it is intriguing to hear from these more
obscure names now.

Not only would I recommend it to anyone interested in Ronnie, but also
to anyone interested in a fascinating musician who chose to shun the
standard rock star trappings and live life on his own terms, despite the
hardships that arose.

Cheers,
Jon
