You asked where to obtain wood.  I reside in PA and get wood usually 
from 3 places:
1) from the Groft & Groft lumber yard in the Buck in MD.

2) at wood carving shows - there is one at Millersville College in PA 
May 6-7, sponsored by the Lancaster PA carving club.  It's a great show,
