I coouldn't agree more.. this is the one I bought.. reason is it is compact enough to bring on a plane trip if I go that way to a seminar or ??? It is powerful and it is quiet. I wouldn't say it is great for chips.. but certainly for dustys from power carving.
Attended a bird carving class at Doane last year and just about everyone had a home built one.. made from smaller Wal-mart fans.. maybe about 12" square.. two side by side in a plywood box.. they seemed quite efficient. unless you were at a table behind them.. then you could feel the wind... wow.. There were a couple that were made from about 6-8 of the larger sized computer fans.. guess the fans were about 6" square.. 2 high and 3-4 wide.. in a ply box.. very efficient.
If you are looking to create chips as well as dust.. maybe one of the lap types would be better for you... they are efficient and relatively quiet.. the chips drop into a tray on your lap.. at the center of the tray is a 4" plastic hose.. like from a dryer vent.. which goes to a small squirrel cage motor and a cloth bag to collect the dust and chips.
The Razaire is pretty expensive.. IMO.. but it works well.
