Hi Harry!
Good question and it will be interesting to hear from others. My first
carving was a walnut walking stick with flowers on a vine around it. A
friend got me started on it and it could be the hardest one also cause my
tools were cheap and dull :-)!
But the one I have had the hardest time with is a free standing relief
cross I started a 1 1/2 years ago. It is almost done - I just have to mount
it and give it away! I was asked to do this for a friend of my mother when
she gave him a chip cross I had done. He wanted one that was 15 to 18" tall
and was told to do what I wanted in design. I spent a lot of that year
thinking about it (trying to find a design I liked but also worrying that
they like it )- a lot!! But now its done and I am pretty proud of it and
will be a bit sad when it is gone. But then again it is going on a
childrens alter so it will have a good home! So that's good. To finish
your question, the way I dealt with the difficulty was to ask lots and lots
of people their opinion of what I was doing and how I could improve it. I
have used that help to improve, change and alter my cross so it is very good
now. And now before I leave - I want to say a GREAT big THANK YOU to the
many people that have talked with me about this project! You have helped
make it!
