heh there Merryl---you are a long way from TO---the 3 secrets to successful  
woodcarving in addition to enthusiasm and patience are :(1) good -sharp tools 
eg  flexcut or Pfeil or Stubai---if you can see your face on the cutting 
surface buy  it----(2)good kiln dried wood (basswood--butternut)---(3) join a  
woodcarving club to advise and answer all your ?'s-------then you're off to  a 
successful venture with only limited frustrations---good  luck---Hugh(skincarp)
