Western Red Cedar is the typical tree used for totem poles. Many were also carved in Yellow Cedar typically called Alaska Yellow Cedar. I've carved both and prefer the yellow. I carved a sign for the Tahola education center on the west coast of Washington state in 1981 that is 35' long and 3' diameter trimmed down. Near the butt it was almost 4' dia and I trimmed it down by hand, using a chainsaw, axe, adze, and drawknife. Then I had to cut a flat surface for the pattern, and carved THAHOLA EDUCATION CENTER on the flat face, letters 18" high raised 1.5" and with chamfered sides. Job took me the better part of 2 months, and I was paid $600 and had to wait almost a year to collect because the prime contractor didn't pick it up until they were ready to install it. How about that? Ray M

Thanks to all who responded with tips about carving cedar. I'm not sure what type of cedar it is, the pieces are actually intended as grilling planks for fish that I found in a local supermarket. It tells you on the package how to grill salmon steaks on it but doesn't mention anything about the wood itself. Oh well, for $2.50 I picked a couple up to try. If it doesn't work how I want to, I've at least got some aromatic fire wood.lol.

BTW Steve your right about the totem poles.

Thanks again
