Hi Chris,
Go to www.carvingpatterns.com Susan Irish's site, she has some great step by step beginner projects and her site is full of helpful tips.
Also this list is a wealth of information. Try a local lumber mill for wood, I use Specialty Hardwoods and I get off cuts at very reasonable prices.
All the best.

Hi everyone,
I'm a noob to woodcarving. I live in Collingwood Ontario and I was wondering what I should do for a first carve? Where can I find beginner patterns? Where can I find good carving wood in my area? 'Cus I checked Michaels Craft Store, WOW! they wanted $9 for a 1.75 X 1.75 X 10" block of Basswood up to $20 bucks or more for bigger pieces and Rounds. HELP!! I am somewhat BRAINBOGGLED over here and don't know where to start. Hope some folks can help me out as I have no idea where to begin and what to try first.
Thanks ALOT in ADVANCE
