There was a time when this list was very active. Lots of discussions about lots of things. Sometimes hostile discussions, sometimes personnel.
There were several topics and emails every day. Here were are on Saturday morning, the last email was from Mush on Wednesday about the carving chat on Wednesday night. Nothing in between.
Maybe we should as a few questions, like what are you carving? (maybe over used), Benefits of power vs sharps carving? (been done but could worth a revisit), Who's gonna win the Super bowl? Predict the final score. Who's going fishing next week-end? Are you getting or carving something for sweety to present on Valentines Day?
Time to liven this place up a bit.

Hi Byron -
I was just thinking things were unusually quiet and wondering what
would generate some new traffic.
How about: What topics re folks interested in seeing discussed? I'll
keep a list and interject a new topic when things get slow.

What are you carving? Nothing ... I know ... really sad!
Power VS Sharps carving? Power for birds and fish is the only way to go ...
sharp edged tools just for the pure pleasure of shearing through a nice piece of
wood quietly.
Who's gonna win the Super Bowl? Hoping for the Cardinals - 21 to 17 ... but it
probably will be the meal ol' Steelers - 35 to 14! :o)
Who's going fishing next weekend? Got to do a carving show in Cedar Rapids, IA
next weekend ... besides, can't see the point of ice fishing.
ValentineS Day carving for my sweety? In her wildest dreams! LOL!
Good try on getting things going Byron!

Like the old days Byron mentioned, Jan - first find a tree (Pine spuce maple ect ect ????), Cut tree, sharpen carving tools and knives, then carve away everything that does not look like a tree.

Well it's been exactly one year since I began carving. As I have said before
I have enjoyed carving so much more than any hobby I have ever had. Thanks
to all of the folks that have helped me out! Here is my latest carving, a
new woodspirit that I hacked out today :) It's carved on the corner of a 1
1/2 x 1 1/2 x 6 inch long basswood stick. Finished in tinted oil and satin
lacquer. Thanks all for looking at my crap for the last year and looking
forward to learning much more from all of you! You can check the woodspirit
out here:

All righty I'll open up a discussion if you'd all like to help me out a bit.? This year will be my first year of formal teaching at a woodcarving roundup.? This is basically a free class but I can charge for the wood blank.? What I would like to teach is?an introduction to?classical carving which really isn't being offered much at any of the roundups.? Classical carving, just to clarify things, means some tool specific carving.? This means minimizing the use of the stop cut and emphasizing either a veiner or v-tool to cut around and outline, chisels and shallow gouges for grounding out and gouges for doing rounding, the sweep of the gouges matching the curve of the carving, rather than whittling away with any tool till you get what shape you want.?No power tools in this class. ?I will be touching on the history of carving and an explanation of the sheffield numbering system and some advanced carving techniques, but imparting that knowledge during the
course of the day rather
than giving a boring lecture.? People in my class will range from beginners to intermediates.? I want to do a classical style relief carving which can be finished by most in roughly 6 hours of carving.? My original ideas were to do either, grapes and leaves, an acanthus leaf design or a traditional shell carving.?
?
Now my topics for discussion are, if you were to come and take my class.... first which design would you be more interested in doing and why.?? Would you rather the design already be on the wood or should I make my students transfer the pattern lines themselves?? Would you find this class interesting?? Any?else you can?think of?would be great and all suggestions will help alot.? Thanks
?
Maura
