Dave,

You can get very fine wet/dry paper at auto parts stores, down to 2000
grit or perhaps smaller. Lee Valley carries micron graded paper in
their catalog and online @ www.leevalley.com. Look under sharpening
supplies. Lee Valley is an excellent supplier, has a lot of very good
tools and is easy to deal with in both US and CA currency.

You can also find extremely fine sanding sheets in some hobby shops that
deal with plastic models. They have small sheets in extremely fine
grits for finishing models.
